Gay Cinema Goes Mainstream

The Brokeback Mountain Collector’s Edition debuts on DVD this month, giving moviegoers a chance to see a gay relationship on screen. The film tells the story of a ranch-hand and rodeo cowboy who meet and fall in love but must hide their affair from other people.

The filmmakers wanted the story to have universal appeal. “The hope was to…have people be impacted and affected by these characters and by their story,” says Executive Producer Michael Costigan. So, the primary challenge for the cast and crew was to depict a gay love story on film in a way that heterosexual moviegoers would understand.
