NBA Player Reveals Anti-Gay Bias

Tim Hardaway, a former basketball player for the Miami Heat, is now suffering a backlash for making anti-gay remarks on a sports radio show. While speaking on The Dan Le Batard Show on February 14, 2007, the sports star said: “I hate gay people….I’m homophobic.”

Male-on-Male Sexual Harassment Complaints Hit Record Highs

In early February 2007, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)
released its report on sexual harassment filings. Last year, more than 23,000 complaints
were filed, including 15.4% (almost 3,700) filed by men – a number that has been increasing

Same-Sex Marriage Gains Support

The 10th Anniversary of Freedom to Marry Day will be held in New York City on February 12, 2007. At the event, attendees will celebrate the birthday of Evan Wolfson, the civil rights leader who founded Freedom to Marry, an organization that works to obtain marriage equality.

After the 2006 mid-term elections, Freedom to Marry issued a statement indicating that the public’s attitude toward same-sex marriage was changing in a positive way. Stonewall Communities Inc., a nonprofit organization, and Abbott Real Estate Development announced that they have completed the first major step toward their plan to build the nation’s first urban residential condominium community targeted to older gay men and lesbians and their friends and families in Boston. Stonewall, in partnership with Abbott, recently purchased land at 9 and 23 Miner Street (just outside of Kenmore Square) to create a new paradigm for inclusive community living. Gay Cinema Goes Mainstream

The Brokeback Mountain Collector’s Edition debuts on DVD this month, giving moviegoers a chance to see a gay relationship on screen. The film tells the story of a ranch-hand and rodeo cowboy who meet and fall in love but must hide their affair from other people.

The filmmakers wanted the story to have universal appeal. “The hope was to…have people be impacted and affected by these characters and by their story,” says Executive Producer Michael Costigan. So, the primary challenge for the cast and crew was to depict a gay love story on film in a way that heterosexual moviegoers would understand.

Coming Out: An Interview

Christopher Lee Nutter made a life-altering acknowledgment. He went from hiding his sexual orientation to publicly declaring that he was gay. He made this declaration in an article he wrote for Details Magazine. It was a public statement, but it was not the end of his journey.
